His first companion was Teraura ("Susannah") a Raatiran who was born about 1775. She died Jul. 15, 1850, on Pitcairn Island. His second companion was Toofaiti ("Nancy") who was born on Tahiti, and died Jun. 9, 1831. His third companion was Maimiti ("Isabella") who was born on Tahiti, and died Sept. 19, 1841, on Pitcairn Island. Children (By Toofaiti) were Polly Young, born circa 1794, and died December 17, 1843; George Young, born circa 1797, and died May 4, 1831; Robert Young, born circa 1799, and died August 18, 1831; and William Young, born in 1799, and died February 6, 1839. Young is said to have been a nephew of Sir George Young, but the official records of the Young family do not support this. Because of his involvement in the mutiny, however, he could have been disowned by the family, and 'purged' from the family records. Soon after the Bounty sailed, Bligh described Young as 'well-educated, well-recommended, the look of an able, stout seaman . . . however, he seems frequently to fall short of what his appearances promise.' He was Christian's best friend on the Bounty, and his first co-conspirator, however that friendship feel apart after the mutiny. On Pitcairn, he formed a close friendship with Adams, with whom he lived as neighbor, sharing possessions and women between themselves. They had also the most even-handed attitude toward the Tahitian men. There is some suspicion that he knew of, and perhaps encouraged the Tahitian men to kill the white men. This suspicion is due to an overheard comment that 'Adams was to be spared.' He also took upon himself the responsibility of executing Quintal. Some historians and authors feel that his character might well have been misjudged by history. He was well-educated, and gracious in manner, and despite his appearance, was the most popular man with the Tahitian women. After the mutiny, Bligh described him as being 'of a dark complexion with rather a bad look.' He had lost several front teeth, and those that remained were all rotten. He was 5 feet tall (the smallest Bounty crewman), but very strong. He was tattooed with a heart with a 'dart through it, and 'E:Y' and date 1788 or 1789.'

Australasian Record 42, July 18, 1938, p. 7. "YOUNG - On May 14, after a short illness, Esma Young, nine-year-old daughter of Brother Robert and Sister Hilda Young, peacefully passed into the sleep of death. Little Esma was a sweet flower of innocent childhood, and loved by all on the island. Her loving disposition and her smiling face of tender charm won the affection of all. We on Pitcairn are passing through an acute epidemic of cold and fever, and Esma was the first to succumb to the sickness. Others have suffered much, and are perhaps not yet out of danger. The saddest fact of all is that Esma's parents are in New Zealand, and know nothing of the death of their dear child. It will be a specially severe blow to Sister Hilda who has been in a Wellington hospital for over four months, undergoing a very serious operation, from which she is just convalescing, and is even now on her way home to Pitcairn - home with a loved one quietly resting in the little island cemetery. May God grant that Esma will be restored to her parents in the 'sweet by and by,' by the faithful, consistent Christian living of her parents. Brother Edgar and Sister Ada Christian feel deeply this sad affliction, as they were the guardians of Esma and her brother Errol, but are trusting in a kind heavenly Father that 'all things work together for good to them that love God.' - Roy P. Clark."
